Backwards Compatibility???

Can RPCS3 run PS2 and PS1 games, or is that only possible on the real PS3?

RPCS3 runs the ps1emu from the PS3 OS. But it's not a very good emulator, so it's recommended to use DuckStation instead.
ps2emu and pspemu are not compatible yet.
    Desktop: Ryzen 7 5800X,   Radeon RX 6800 XT, 2x8G DDR4 3600MHz, Manjaro Linux
     Laptop: Ryzen 9 5900HX,  Radeon RX 6700M,   2x8G DDR4 3200MHz, Manjaro Linux
Old Desktop: AMD FX-8350,     Radeon R9 280X,    2x4G DDR3 1600MHz, Manjaro Linux

They can't work before multi-process is implemented, which is a big task that is wanted but so far no one has wanted to tackle it.
Note that multi-process support is not needed to play any PS3 commercial games.
