I don't really know what makes them go up a version, probably any big changes like DX12 in the latest one.
Just keep updated with the latest bigpet builds, as when the version number change comes it will probably only be a small difference between that and the latest bigpet build.

Version numbers are irrelevant since we don't and won't do "Stable" releases in foreseeable future. Using latest build from git is always advised.
