I spent 73 hours creating a fresh back-up from my PS3, thinking it could be used with the emulator.  I was hoping to not have to install any custom firmware on my console, as my collection is large and I don't want to risk bricking the console.  Since it's not possible now, is it possible to add down the road?  Or, do I need to install firmware onto my PS3?

You can unpack your backup on PC with ps3xport.
You need your PS3 key to decrypt the protected areas though. User data can be accessed without the key (saves, trophies, etc).
