That's true, we can, and I've got the 4.76 modules by exactly extracting them from an update .PUP file.
However, I'm not sure if that's legal because people who don't own a PS3 (I have one) can extract the firmware.
cygwin isn't needed, I used a tool for that which extracts contents of the PS3UPDAT.PUP file and then from the dev_flash packed file.
Since it's online on Sony's website for anyone to download though I might add it to the guide if no devs oppose to that.
