Is there any way to configure mouse controls so diagonal movements are not clunky

I am trying to play FPS games (sime far I have tried Battlefield Bad Company 1 and Call Of Duty 3) with a keyboard and mouse. Keyboard works fine but the mouse input is really clunky. Up and down movements as well as left and right movements are ok but diagonal movements (e.g. up and left at the same time) are very clunky and sticky. Also when I make too many diagonal movements and then try to moving the mouse again, the mouse gets stuck and certain inputs are not accounted in-game (spexifically when i tried bf bad company 1). Is there any way to make the diagonal movements more normal, and close to what a game with mouse support would function, or am I to ise the controller? Please answer.
