Is An FX-8370 Viable For Emulation? - RyanFialcowitz - 05-22-2019

I have an FX-8370 8 core @ 4.0GHz and while I can get Demon's Souls to run, it does not do so very well. I get slowdown and garbled/corrupted audio.

I checked out the Quickstart guide and it recommends a six core Ryzen or better. Looking around online most of the six cores tend to have a lower clock speed. So, I was wondering two things:

1.) Is there anywhere to get an FX-8370 to produce decent results?

2.) What makes a Ryzen better when it has less cores and/or a lower clock speed?

1) Overclock it. FX chips are made to be overclocked, if you don't do it you're just wasting your money. 8350 overclocks 500/600 MHz on stock voltage as a start.

2) Not all Ryzen CPUs are better.. the recommendation is that you have at least a hexa-core Ryzen, and even then it may not be enough for some demanding games. The problem is that the Bulldozer architecture is kinda bad, they group 2 CPU cores per 1 module that shares resources between these 2 CPU cores and stuff gets slowed down due to that. Ryzen architecture also has problems, cores are separated between 2 CCX modules and the latency is high enough that it causes issues on RPCS3 without running all SPU threads on only one half of the cores.

1.) How much of an overclock would I need to get good performance?

2.) Is there anything in particular I should be looking for in a new C.P.U. that would be relevant to getting good performance with RPCS3?

It depends on the game, overall you won't get the same performance you'd get with a decent CPU but it's a nice performance boost overall. Just overclock to a sweet spot and stay there. Mine is 4.6GHz.

TSX Instruction Set is a plus, Intel architecture over AMD due to the CCX latency issue, and lots of cores like i7 8700K or i9 9900K (but not too many like Threadripper).

You didn't mention clock speed- I'm guessing it's not as relevant here?

Of course it is, but clock speed is not really a valid measure of comparison between two completely different architectures.
You should aim for the highest clock speed you can get. Best performance on RPCS3 is currently achieved using 8700K or 9900K at 5 - 5.3GHz
